It is fugly. Seriously, the corners on the top of the grille just totally screw it up. Everything else is swoopy and sleek and curvy and then the designer got to the top of the grille and just said "fuck it, hand me the straight edge, it's 4:30 Friday and I'm out of here".

I love it. I hope the Genesis Coupe follows the same design.

I don't mind the way it looks.

WHY DOES THIS SEEM ACCEPTABLE TO AUTO DESIGNERS?!

I assume you mean this ?
It's a common trend nowadays, thanks to pedestrian impact regulations.

Unfortunately, it's not only Hyundai... http://incubme.com/wp-content/upl… / http://www.blogcdn.com/de.autoblog.co…

I think it doesn't look bad.

ITS NOT. BLAME THE ENGINEERS.

I don't see which limitation requires such an unsightly seam - but I feel like you're right - there must be some kind of restriction making them do this. Lord, I hope that's the case. Otherwise I have lost all hope for my fellow design peers.

The one where the hood must clear the engine by 20mm.

That's just saying that you need roughly 3/4" between the underside of the hood and any engine components. That's not terribly difficult and certainly doesn't require that seam.

I really liked it when I first saw it in person. I enjoy a good upright grill, when appropriately done (aka not an aftermaket chrome thing on a 2007 300 V6)

At least the grill doesn't look EXACTLY LIKE A DEBADGED MERC anymore.
Wait, yes it does.

No, it has nothing to do with the profile. It is the sharp corners at the top of the grille. They don't fit the look of the rest of the car.

The uprightness of the grille doesn't bother me. The corners on top do.

I'm not actually talking about the seam at the front of the hood, though those are ugly. I'm talking about the top corners of the grille. Everything else flows, but then there are these sharp corners at the top of the grille that don't match the rest of the design.

Ah I see. I was just assuming you meant the bit of design that makes me feel sick. Nevertheless, don't you think the creases above the lights that evolve from these pointy bits are extensions of the topmost chrome stripe in the grille? I think there is a nice round line that catches these corners and gives the creases some strength. I am not saying its very beautiful but it seems like a consistent bit of design.

When Hyundai started making the Genesis, I thought they were onto something.
When Hyundai redesigned the Genesis, They got off that thing real fucking quick.
